The Trumpeter Swan, North America's largest native waterfowl, is a majestic bird with a powerful presence. Often shrouded in myth and legend, these "trumpeting giants" grace wetlands and lakes with their elegant forms and unforgettable calls. This article delves into the fascinating world of the Trumpeter Swan, exploring their remarkable comeback from near extinction, their impressive adaptations, and their vital role in healthy ecosystems.
We are very lucky to have a pair of Trumpeters nesting at NSA Annapolis for the third consecutive year. It's quite rare for Trumpeters to be in MD, and even rarer for them to have young here. I confess to being a big fan. It's very likely we will see this year's cygnets in as very few days, and I'll keep you posted.
I'm going to turn 80 in in a couple of weeks, so I'm sponsoring a fund raiser for the Trumpeter Swan Society , which is largely responsible for the return of these birds from the brink of extinction earlier in the 20th century. If you want to contribute, go to my Facebook page. Thank you for your help.
