Vigil Mourns Broadneck High School Student Shot by Boyfriend
Kymici Brown, 17, was remembered at a Wednesday vigil in Annapolis; her boyfriend told police the fatal shooting was an accident.

Annapolis, MD — The boyfriend of an Annapolis girl remains in jail on a murder charge, while friends and family of Kymici Brown gathered Wednesday night in a vigil to remember the shooting victim.
Kymici Brown, 17, was shot about noon Monday in a home in the 1300 block of Tyler Avenue. She was taken to Anne Arundel Medical Center but later died.
Her boyfriend, Ryan Surgeon, 19, of Laurel, was inside the home when officers arrived and said the shooting was an accident. He was arrested and charged with first- and second-degree murder, as well as other lesser charges.

Annapolis Police say Surgeon told them he was playing with the loaded handgun, dancing with it, and had cocked and uncocked it when it went off, shooting Brown in the chest.
“He had made statements to us that he accidentally shot the victim," Annapolis Police Department Cpl. Amy Miguez told WBAL.

Brown, a junior at Broadneck High School, ran track and was looked up to by younger children in her neighborhood.
School principal Dr. David Smith released a statement that said, in part, "Kymici was an outgoing student with an engaging personality that made her very popular among students and staff alike. She had worked very hard in school and showed tremendous growth of the last three years, something that drew her even closer to members of our staff."
Pastor Charles Carroll told the crowd Wednesday that the Robinwood community must create change.
"If we don't get the guns out of the (hands of) young people, we're going to let go of a lot more balloons," Carroll said, according to the Capital-Gazette. "Only we can save our community. Only we can save our children."
Surgeon is being held at the Jennifer Road Detention Center on $1.5-million bond.
