Weather Alert: Flood Warning Issued As Storms Drench Maryland

The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning Tuesday for several Maryland counties, plus Baltimore, as storms sweep through.

The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning for much of Maryland after strong thunderstorms dumped up to 2 inches of rain in some areas, with more rainfall possible this evening.

Areas included in the flood warning are: Baltimore, Anne Arundel, Howard and Harford counties, along with the city of Baltimore. The warning extends until 6 p.m.

The weather service says another inch or two or rain is possible, with flooding likely in these areas: Baltimore, Columbia, Severn, Pikesville, Middle River, Cockeysville, Elkridge, Aberdeen, Havre De Grace, Riviera Beach, Aberdeen Proving Ground, Back River, Millers Island, Baltimore-Washington Airport,North Point State Park, Glen Burnie, Ellicott City, Dundalk, Towson and Bel Air South.

Earlier, much of the state was under a severe thunderstorm warning that expired at 2:15 p.m. ET., while Howard and a portion of Baltimore county were under a tornado warning that ended at 2 p.m.

A severe thunderstorm watch means that atmospheric conditions are favorable for severe thunderstorm development. The severe thunderstorm watch outlines an area where an organized threat of severe thunderstorms is expected generally during a three- to six-hour period.

A warning means a thunderstorm is imminent.

The warning includes Baltimore, Anne Arundel, Prince George’s, Carroll, Howard And Montgomery counties, along with the city of Baltimore, which was briefly under a tornado warning.

Here's the NWS forecast for the area Tuesday afternoon and evening:

"...Showers and thunderstorms likely this afternoon. Some thunderstorms may produce gusty winds this afternoon. Highs in the lower 90s. West winds around 10 mph. Chance of rain 70 percent. Mostly cloudy with showers and thunderstorms likely in the evening...then mostly clear with a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms after midnight. Some thunderstorms may produce gusty winds in the evening. Lows in the upper 60s. West winds 5 to 10 mph. Chance of rain 60 percent."
