William Matthew Anderson III, 73, of Annapolis, died Feb. 8 after a two-year battle with cancer.
He was born on July 22, 1942, to William Matthew Anderson Jr., and Louise Craig Anderson of Pikesville. His family moved to Kent Island in 1960. He graduated from Loyola Blakefield School in Baltimore, in 1960, and attended Villanova University (Pa.), and graduated from the Baltimore College of Commerce (now The University of MD at Baltimore) in 1972 with a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting.

He served in the United States Marine Corps Reserves from 1963 to 1969, at which time he received an Honorable Discharge.
He is preceded in death by his parents, of Baltimore, and half-sister Carol Garrett of Jacksonville, Fla.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Sandra Eichner Anderson, his children, Michelle Lynee Anderson of Annapolis, and Eric Craig and his wife Angela Anderson of Frederick; as well as four grandchildren, Elizabeth Rose, Molly Guinevere and Isabella Katerina Anderson, and Finn Houston Smith. He is also survived by his brother, Robert Craig Anderson of Castle Rock, Co., and uncle Richard Craig of Augusta, Ga.
He retired from the State of Maryland Income Tax Division in 1995 after 32 years of service, where he served as Chief Auditor under the leadership of the renowned Louis L. Goldstein. He was well-known as “Mr. Bill, the Go-To Guy” in his community, where he resided with his wife for 46 years. He served in multiple roles for more than 40 years including president, board member, administrator and/or committee member.
An avid waterman, his hobbies also included treasure hunting, crabbing and fishing, activities to benefit his community, fixing anything and everything, and spending time with family and friends.
Friends may call at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road in Edgewater, on Friday, Feb. 12, from 1-3 p.m. and 6-8 p.m., where a service will be held on Saturday, Feb. 13, at 10:30 a.m.
Interment will be held at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Annapolis.
