Woman Stashed Lighter That Ignited Jail Fire Where?

Nearby news: A woman reportedly smuggled a lighter when taken to the Ocean City jail for public intoxication.

An intoxicated woman reportedly smuggled a cigarette lighter into the Ocean City jail by concealing it in her vagina, then lit her underwear and a jail telephone on fire.

DelMarvaNow reports that police found Lisa Bergling Kerstetter, 53, of Bishopville crawling around the parking lot of a 64th Street shopping center on Wednesday night. She had just jumped out of a taxi that was taking her home from an Ocean City bar.

A police officer who tried to help her find another cab home took an incoherent Kerstetter into custody after she allegedly threatened to hit a cop with a soda bottle, which she then threw at a business window.

Kerstetter was searched, and then placed in a ground-floor holding cell with a pay phone and intercome, the newpaper reports. Authorities say she buzzed the desk officer, telling him that “he better let her go.” The officer heard a crackling noise from the intercom, had an aide to check on her, and found smoke in the hallway.

Ocean City Police say found Kerstetter in possession a disposable plastic lighter. She reportedly removed her underwear, draped it over the pay phone, then ignited the panties with the smuggled cigarette lighter.

Police spokeswoman Lindsay Richard told the newspaper that Kerstetter hid the lighter “in a spot where our public safety aides would not typically check,”

Kerstetter faces multiple charges of arson, reckless endangerment, and endangering others by being intoxicated, according to Maryland online court records.
