ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY, MD — The 2026 men's FIFA World Cup has officially entered the Round of 32, a starting point that had been in place for decades before it was scrapped by organizers.
The tournament's expansion to 48 teams makes the 2026 edition the largest World Cup ever and the first format change since the 1998 World Cup. The expansion was approved in 2017.
Over the last several weeks, fans have arrived in North America from across the globe for matches being played in the U.S., Canada and Mexico.
As of this article's publication, the tournament has less than three weeks left in competition. The final match is scheduled for July 19 at 3 p.m.

But, until then, watch parties and related events will continue to be held across the region in celebration of a sport that brings together not only dedicated soccer fans but also introduces newcomers to the beautiful game.
While no games are being held in Maryland, the closest matches will take place at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. A total of six games are set to take place at the arena.
