ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY, MD — The body of a boater who went missing over the weekend in Rock Creek was recovered by search crews late Monday.
The Maryland Natural Resources Police identified the boater as David Lawrence Jones, a 52-year-old man from Montgomery County's Silver Spring area.
MNRP spokesperson Vincent Dortenzo told Patch on Tuesday that Jones was found by dive teams shortly before 6 p.m. on Monday.
Authorities say Jones jumped from a pontoon boat on Sunday without a lifejacket to retrieve a hat that had fallen into the water. Emergency crews were eventually called to the scene around 4:15 p.m. after he failed to resurface.
In addition to the MNRP, officials with the Anne Arundel County Fire Department, the Baltimore County Fire Department, the Maryland State Police Trooper 6 helicopter, and the Coast Guard participated in the dayslong search.
Jones' body was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for an autopsy.
An investigation by the MNRP remains ongoing.
