Anne Arundel Citizens Police Academy Taking Applications

Applications are being accepted for the Anne Arundel County Citizens Police Academy.

MILLERSVILLE, MD — If you want to learn more about how Anne Arundel County Police officers do their job, here's your chance. Applications are being accepted for the Citizens Police Academy, which provides Anne Arundel County residents, age 21 and older, an opportunity to learn about laws, police procedures, forensics, crime scene collections, resource management and more.

The Citizens’ Police Academy is 16 weeks (sessions) long. The sessions are held once a week for three hours on Thursdays during the course at various locations throughout the county, according to a news release. Dates for the academy are August 26 through December 6, on Thursday nights from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at various locations throughout Anne Arundel County.

Participants can demonstrate what they have learned through some hands-on practical applications. Attendees will learn self-defense, arrest techniques, vehicle maneuvers, as well as learn about many other areas of the police department. You will also learn about how to improve the quality of life in your community by partnering with the police department.

The goal of the Anne Arundel County Police Citizens Police Academy is to build bridges between the communities served and their police department. "We do this by offering an opportunity to gain a better understanding of the department and to develop a relationship with the community members through education and training. Chief Timothy Altomare and members of the Anne Arundel County Police Department believe the best way to protect yourself is through knowledge," the department said in a news release.

Community members are invited to come to various Anne Arundel County Police Department facilities to learn first-hand what a police officer does and why they do those things. The Citizens Police Academy allows community members to learn what resources are available to them through the Police Department. It also allows the communities to bond with the department and form a “partnership.”
