Bodkin Elementary Hosts Annual Fair

The school's Environmental and Cultural Fair typically attracts more than 500 visitors, according to a Bodkin PTA member.

The fifth annual Environmental and Cultural Fair at will take place this weekend. The fair raises funds for charitable and green causes and will run Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the school.

The fair typically attracts more than 500 visitors and serves as a way for the school to reach out to the community, according to Bodkin PTA member Jennifer O'Sullivan.

“The fair was created to fulfill two needs at Bodkin,” O’Sullivan said in an email to Patch. “The first was to create a community outreach to support green initiatives at Bodkin. The second objective was to support our cultural connection with Kindness in Action charity organization.”

Kindness is Action is a way students at Bodkin connect with impoverished areas of the world. Funds from the school go directly to projects promoting health and education in other areas, according to O’Sullivan.

The theme for the fair is “Educate, Create, and Shop.” The school asked educational groups and vendors with uniquely cultural or environmental interests to attend. Local schools and were also asked to attend because of their active green programs.

“Children who attend will be able to create eco-crafts and enjoy many interactive displays,” O’Sullivan wrote. “Our Bodkin Elementary students have made eco-crafts to sell at the Fair in order to support Kindness in Action. A local artist has painted a rain barrel to auction and many locals have supplied several 'green' baskets to raffle away.”

Bodkin also created a personalized, reusable bag and a window sticker, which will be available for purchase at the event.

Eco-goats, bicycle powered smoothies and henna tattoos are all part of the fun,” O’Sullivan wrote. “We will have music from a local band and food options, including baked goodies from Glenn's Bakery.”

Admission to the fair is free with the opportunity to purchase and all are invited to attend.
