BOYS BASKETBALL: Players React to Playoff Win

The Chesapeake Cougars will travel to Gambrills Tuesday night to take on the No. 1 seeded Arundel Wildcats.

 

The Chesapeake High School boys in the first round of the 4A east region playoffs. Cougars head coach Marlon Bailey said he can’t even remember the last time Chesapeake won a playoff game.  

Winning a playoff game was a goal the team was striving for all season. Patch caught up with a few members of the team after the big win to get their reactions.

Junior Aaron Terry:

“It was just an emotional game,” said Terry. “We just wanted to win. It’s the first playoff game we have won in a long time and we just came out here and worked hard as a team.”

Terry led the team in scoring Friday night with 23 points.

“I just had to step up and lead my team and make sure I kept everyone calm and collected,” he said. “I had to make sure we didn’t get too high or too low. I’m just so happy for my team right now.”

Senior Adam Ritchie

“It was our first playoff game as seniors and we just really wanted to win,” Ritchie said. “Personally, I just really wanted to get this win for Chesapeake. It is the first playoff game we have won since I’ve been here.”

Ritchie had 18 points on the night.

Senior Brett Garver

“It means a lot for Chesapeake and a lot for our seniors; we don’t want to stop playing,” Garver said. “This year is the best year I have ever had. We have been playing really well and we don’t want to stop.”

Chesapeake will travel to Gambrills Tuesday night to take on the No. 1 seeded Arundel Wildcats. The Wildcats finished the regular season with a 22-1 record and earned a first round bye in the tournament.

“We want to go at them as hard as we can,” said Garver. “Arundel is not a team that we play a lot, but we feel like coming off the [South River] win we can make a run of it.”

The two teams met during the regular season on Jan. 10. The Cougars fell to the Wildcats 95-65.

Tipoff for the Arundel–Chesapeake matchup is set for 7 p.m.
