Eagle Cove Art Students Shine

First-grade art students at are tackling Claude Monet’s work.

With the help of Eagle Cove art teacher Mary Ellen Geissenhainer, first-grade students at Eagle Cove just completed their own rendition of Monet’s "Bridge Over a Pond of Water Lilies" painting.  

The students created the artwork using watercolors. Once they were finished, Geissenhainer took each child’s picture and glued it to the artwork to make it seem like the kids were standing on the bridge.

Monet isn’t the only thing Eagle Cove art students are working on this year. Fifth-graders at the school have just finished painting their own self portraits; and the fourth-graders just completed a weaving unit.

The hallways of the school are lined with rather remarkable works of art all done by Eagle Cove students. The work is beyond impressive, but Geissenhainer said anyone can be an artist.

“You just have to break it down into the simplest steps,” she said. “When I am teaching sometimes I find the kids not getting it, so we break it down into smaller steps and eventually it all comes together.”

The first-grade students are currently working on clay hearts for Valentine’s Day. The students mold the clay and paint the hearts all by themselves. And many excited first-graders claimed that clay projects were their absolute favorite.

“They love working with clay,” Geissenhainer said. “I don’t know why but it always seems to be their favorite. It is fun to watch them work.”
