Faith Loudon Assesses the DREAM Act

Faith Loudon, Republican candidate for Maryland’s 4th Congressional District seat, says Maryland colleges have no room for what the DREAM Act proposes.

When Loudon , she weighed in on some important issues for the 2012 election.

In the first of a three-part series, Patch shared , and how it affects students in Anne Arundel County schools.

In this edition, Loudon weighs in on the DREAM Act—proposed legislation that would grant permanent residency and in-state tuition to a select group of young illegal immigrants.

“The thing that concerns me is we are allowing people who are here illegally to take spots in our colleges that we don’t have room for,” Loudon said. “Then the kids, the citizens, born in this United States, the families born in the United States don’t have spots. I can’t believe they would do it.”

Supporters of the DREAM Act say the legislation would give illegal immigrants, who arrived in the United States as minors the chance to gain permanent residency if they demonstrate good moral character and graduate from high school. They feel the legislation grants reprieve for young illegal immigrants and offers economical and social benefits.

Those against the act feel if passed, the legislation would encourage immigrants to stay here illegally.

Loudon argued that those supporting the DREAM Act are doing so as a ploy to gain votes from a more liberal crowd. She said that if it passed, the DREAM Act would take college sports away from students who were in the United States legally, and she didn’t think that was fair.

“Kids do apply to the University of Maryland and Towson that are not going to be able to go,” Loudon said. “I don’t understand how they can be so concerned with getting votes that they would do this.”
