Pasadena Driver Hits, Injures Flagger Near Elementary School

A road worker suffered life-threatening injuries when she was hit Tuesday near a Pasadena school, Anne Arundel County Police say.

PASADENA, MD — A road construction flagger suffered life-threatening injuries in a crash near Pasadena Elementary School Tuesday, police reported. The collision was described as serious by the Anne Arundel County Police Department.

Pasadena Road was closed between Pasadena Elementary School and Baltimore Annapolis Boulevard, officials said just before noon on Tuesday, Dec. 18. The road had reopened by 2 p.m.

Police said a four-door Chevrolet driven by Shane Shorter, 26, of the 8300 block of Tyndswall Place in Pasadena, was eastbound on Pasadena Road, where traffic is reduced to one lane for construction. A 30-year-old construction worker from Baltimore was controlling traffic using a rotating stop/slow sign. Shorter did not see the construction worker and hit her near the right edge of the road, according to officials.

The driver remained at the scene. The unidentified worker was taken to an area trauma center with life-threatening injuries.

The preliminary cause of the crash appears to be Shorter’s failure to see the construction worker. There is no indication of excessive speed or alcohol use by the driver, police said. The Traffic Safety Section is handing the investigation and the case will be reviewed by the state's attorney.
