Hospice of the Chesapeake Celebrates Its Volunteers
Annual awards luncheon followed National Volunteer Week.
Hospice of the Chesapeake volunteers and staff celebrated National Volunteer Week (April 10-16) at the nonprofit’s annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon held April 19 at the Loews Hotel in Annapolis.
Among the approximately 200 Hospice of the Chesapeake volunteers who attended were this year’s Spirit of Hospice Award recipients the Tuck-In Team, a group of volunteers who make phone calls to hundreds of patients and their families each Thursday to make sure they have everything they need before the weekend. The team includes Lee Ballantyne, Alan Bellack, Joan Blum, Nancy Bowman-Williams, Irene Gamboa, Frances Harwood, Diane Heaney, Cari Mackes, Elena Maldonado and Sharon Reynolds.
Also receiving a Spirit of Hospice Award was Elizabeth Liechty of Millersville. The Spirit of Hospice Award was inaugurated in 2007 to acknowledge the commitment of our non-patient care volunteers. The assistance they provide in our various departments is vital to carrying out the mission at Hospice of the Chesapeake.

Hospice of the Chesapeake also used the opportunity to pay homage to Betty Asplund posthumously on the 25th Celebration of Camp Nabi, with her husband Walter Asplund of Millersville accepting on her behalf. Betty Asplund, the founding Director of what would become the Chesapeake Life Center, started the camp in 1992 to help children grieving the loss of a loved one find kindred spirits with whom to share and heal.
