Local Teachers Earn National Certification

Continuing their march for teachers recognized as “highly-qualified,” Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS) announced Friday that 41 teachers—five from south county—attained prestigious National Board Certification (NBC), according to a media release from schools spokesman Bob Mosier.

NBC status, the highest teaching credential in the nation, is earned by undergoing a rigorous self- and peer-evaluation process under terms directed by the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards.

The addition of these 41 teachers brings the total number of teachers who have earned the honor while working for the county to 314. Anne Arundel County boasts 14 percent of the teachers in the state who have earned board certification.

Teachers local to Pasadena who made board certification in 2011 are:

In the release, Superintendent Kevin Maxwell said, “National Board Certification is an arduous but rewarding process that allows teachers to reflect on their own practices and methods, and to improve instructional outcomes for all of their children. These teachers deserve an immense amount of credit for the lengths to which they have gone to better themselves and help their students.”

In the release, Mosier said that in the last four years nearly 200 Anne Arundel County teachers have achieved National Board Certified status. More than 80 educators are seeking to earn the distinction in the 2011-2012 school year.
