Memorial Day Closures, Mayo Beach And Pool Openings

Mayo Beach in Anne Arundel County will officially open Memorial Day, along with many local pools. However, other entities will be closed.

ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY, MD – Most government offices and a number of private businesses will be closed on Memorial Day, which is Monday, May 27. Schools that are still in session will be closed for the federal holiday. Most banks will not be open and the U.S. Postal Service will not be delivering mail.

The New York Stock Exchange, Nasdaq and bond markets will not be operating and all offices at Fort Meade will be closed. Department of Motor Vehicle offices across the county will be closed and courts will not be in session. There not be any trash or recycling collection on Monday, so check with your provider to see when the pickup date will be rescheduled.

However, many area pools kick off the swimming season by opening on Memorial Day. The Kenneth R. Dunn Municipal Pool at Truxtun Park will open May 25 for the summer season. It is located at 251 Pump House Road.

Mayo Beach will open Memorial Day and remain accessible until Labor Day. The beach is free and open to the community from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mayo Beach and park is located at 4150 Honeysuckle Dr. in Edgewater. Many grocery stores, restaurants and retail centers will be open, too, and offer special Memorial Day deals.

Memorial Day was first recognized as a national holiday by an act of Congress in 1971. The federal holiday honors soldiers who have perished in military service.
