You could say that cancer makes the owners of The Original Greene Turtle crabby. Eastern Shore lovers and vacationers to Ocean City may know The Original Greene Turtle as a summer destination for delicious food like their legendary crab dip, crab fries, crab cakes and crab pizza, but they may not know the owners' long history of fighting cancer with the American Cancer Society, which goes back at least 25 years.

Most recently in early March, the Steve & Dawne Pappas family of The Original Greene Turtle presented a $15,000 check to the Society specifically in support of three important American Cancer Society programs which attack cancer from several angles:

  • Road to Recovery which provides free rides to treatment for cancer patients.
  • ResearcHERS, a brand-new program that fuels funding for American Cancer Society-funded female researchers to support more breakthroughs in the fight against cancer. In addition, Dawne Pappas has signed on as the first ResearcHERS ambassador for the Greater Philadelphia campaign.
  • American Cancer Society Hope Lodge of Baltimore which provides free lodging for cancer patients travelling long distance to Baltimore for treatment. Baltimore Hope Lodge has 26 patient guest rooms and provides door to door transportation for patients to their cancer treatment facilities. This home away from home features a kitchen where guests can prepare meals, laundry room, library, great room and guest activities.

Dawne Pappas is well-known on the Eastern Shore for being a driving force behind many American Cancer Society activities. As chair of the annual December Holiday Wrappings Fashion Show and Luncheon in Ocean City, she led that fantastic fundraiser for the last 8 years. She’s also the founder of Relay For Life of North Worcester almost 25 years ago, past chair of Daffodil Days, past president of the Society’s Worcester board of directors and past Pink Ribbon Classic committee member. She and her husband Steve have hosted many local Society Championship Golf Tournaments and brought a 700-player Division Tournament to Worcester County. In addition, Dawne gets behind the driver's wheel and drives for Road to Recovery, taking patients to Atlantic General’s Cancer Center and as far away as treatment centers in Baltimore.
