'Overwhelming Odor of Marijuana' Leads to Arrest: Police

A traffic stop of a BMW missing a front tag led to a man's arrest on multiple drug and weapons charges, police say.

The “overwhelming” smell of marijuana smoke reportedly coming from an SUV during a traffic stop in South County led police to seize drugs, cash and the vehicle.

Anne Arundel County Police stopped the vehicle Monday night in front of the Lothian Fire Department because it was missing a front tag. When the officer approached the vehicle he noticed an “overwhelming odor of marijuana” coming from the BMW, and saw a gun magazine on the rear seat, police say.

During a search of the SUV, officers found a loaded Glock handgun with three magazines, 37.8 grams of marijuana, 20 pieces of Edibles which contained THC, 8.22 grams of cocaine, $2,768 cash, and assorted paraphernalia, including a bag sealer, baggies, and a scale. The street value of the narcotics seized was $2,255.40.

The drugs and handgun were seized, along with the vehicle, a 2009 BMW X5.

Lucas McKane William Kegley of Chesapeake Beach was charged with traffic charges, possession with the intent to distribute marijuana and cocaine, possession of marijuana and cocaine, possession of paraphernalia, and assorted felony handgun charges.

While packaging all the items seized, 41.13 grams of an off-white crystal substance was located in a blue duffle bag. The substance was sent to the CDS lab to be tested.
