Pasadena Elementary Teachers Dance with Louie

The Bowie Baysox sponsored an assembly at Pasadena Elementary to encourage kids to read.

Teachers at Pasadena Elementary were busy busting a move with Bowie Baysox mascot Louie Thursday afternoon in an assembly.

Louie, along with Baysox intern Allan Hutchins put on a reading skit to promote the Read and Hit a Homerun Program, which Pasadena Elementary students are participating in.

“We do the program with the Baysox every year. The kids need to read at least four books to get a free ticket to a game,” said Pasadena Elementary reading specialist Lele Demestinas. “This is the first time we had Louie come though and it is very exciting. I am hoping Louie will inspire the kids to read four books.”

The Baysox reading skit features a poem that tells the story of how Louie learned to play baseball. Throughout the poem Louie dances and jumps around, and at the end Hutchins encourages the students to read four books so they can watch a baseball game for free.

The kids laughed and cheered with Louie through the entire assembly. They even waited in long lines to high-five the fuzzy green mascot at the end of the presentation.

Pasadena Elementary teachers got in on the fun too. Some teachers got up on stage to dance with Louie at the end of the presentation. And there could be even more fun to come amongst the schools administrators.

Demestinas said that if every child in the school reads four books the school’s principal and assistant principal will do something wacky.

“They will wear crazy mismatched clothes or a wig,” said Demestinas. “Or my favorite—do a dance contest as Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber, which I would love to see. So I am really hoping the Louie skit inspired kids to read.”

The Baysox program and assembly coincided nicely with the schools Read across America celebration. The kids have been wearing designated colors all week and will dress up as their favorite Dr. Seuss characters on Friday.
