Anne Arundel County Recreation and Parks serves millions of residents and visitors annually through a wide variety of services and programs. Its primary focus is to provide comprehensive recreational programs for residents and safeguard valuable land through the maintenance and management of over 160 parks and natural areas. The department manages specialized recreational facilities, including two swim centers, two golf courses, three ice rinks, a baseball stadium, a softball complex, and programs tailored to diverse needs ranging from school-age childcare to adaptive recreation. It also cares for thousands of acres of land, encompassing community parks, greenways, archaeological sites, environmental and historical preserves, and large regional parks spanning several hundred acres. Members of the U.S. Navy Band's Commodores Jazz Ensemble received a standing ovation Sunday night from those who attended their concert in John H. Downs Memorial Park in Pasadena. Known simply as Downs Park, the facility is the site of the Bayside Summer Concert Series, and musical groups may be seen on Sundays at 6:30 p.m. The park is located on the Chesapeake Bay and is part of the Anne Arundel County Department of Recreation &amp; Parks. Sunday night's performance was the last such performance in Pasadena for Musician-Chief Petty Officer Yolanda C. Pelzer, of Columbia, S.C., who is scheduled to retire soon from military service.
