This Week at the Farmers Market

Fresh Peaches

Remember hard as rock, mealy fruit from the grocery store last winter?  Well, no more!  Peach season is in full swing!  You know the ones, the soft, sweet, ready to drip peach juice all over your shirt the moment you bite—you know you should eat it right there, maybe even leaning over a trash can at the farmers market.

Everyone wants the perfect peach.  According to Russ Parsons, author of How to Pick a Peach, ignore any deceiving red blush (as it is bred into peaches) and look at the underlying yellow tone; the warmer the tone, the riper and sweeter the peach.  Snatch those up and eat them right there at the market, or slice them up and eat them with cream and brown sugar.  How about a peach cobbler recipe that takes only 15 minutes of prep time?  Peaches can be grilled for a scrumptious Grilled Peaches with Cinnamon Sugar Butter dessert, lightly sugar dusted peaches topped with a mint garnish.

Peaches are not just for dessert.  Try them in Chicken and Peaches, a meal in 30 minutes that combines cooked peaches with chicken breast and thighs.

You just never know when you are going to get that bum peach.  Cool yellow with green undertones spells a tart and crunchy peach.  Sure you can let it ripen on the counter, but it will never be sweeter.  Try this salad recipe for Green Peach Salad.
