Historic Kensington Map Finds a New Home

Kensington Improvement Association presents the Friends of Arbutus Library with a 1926 map of their neighborhood as they celebrate their 85th birthday celebration.

The map is a well preserved piece of history showing what Kensington was supposed to be like in 1926 according to Marilyn Maitland, President of Kensington Improvement Association Committee.  It was expected to be a suburban cottage for the tired executive anxious to get out of the city, complete with its own swimming pool Maitland points out.

“The pool never did happen, but that was pretty forward thinking in 1926,” says Maitland.

One goal the Kensington Improvement Association has is to encourage people to get to know their community and neighbors, which seem especially timely after an event like Hurricane Irene says Lisa de Hernandez, Chair of the Kensington Improvement Association 85th birthday celebration.

The map will be added to the library’s collection of research materials including other maps, obituaries, clippings on important individuals in the community as well as photographs.

“We are delighted to get this,” says Harry Robertson, President of Friends of the Arbutus Library.
