No Injuries After Homemade Explosive Device Detonated in Theater

Police are asking anyone with pictures or video of a homemade explosive device detonated in the Cinemark Theater, 7000 Arundel Mills Blvd., late Saturday night to contact them.

Initial calls to police reported shots were fired in the movie theater. Instead, someone had detonated a homemade device of fireworks inside a juice bottle, according to Anne Arundel County Police. The detonation was loud enough to cause people to think a gun had been fired. The exact type of fireworks is unknown. 

About 325 tickets had been sold for the 8:30 p.m. screening of “300: The Rise of Empire,” but the theater was not at its full capacity at the time of this incident, authorities said. There were no injuries and no damage from the detonation.

As a precaution, the entire theater was evacuated and searched by officers and K-9s. Officers found the device and collected it as evidence. A search of the rest of the building yielded no other device.

One person was taken to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries that were not a direct result of this incident, police said.

Anne Arundel County Police Detectives along with the Anne Arundel County Fire Marshall’s Office are investigating this incident. There are currently no suspects.
