Theft Suspect Shot When Auto Owner Appears with Rifle: Police

A 17-year-old was charged after police said he tampered with the vehicle of a man who came out with a rifle and shot him in the upper body.

LANSDOWNE, MD — A 17-year-old was charged after police allege he was trying to break into a vehicle Wednesday morning in the 100 block of Hazel Avenue when the auto owner shot him.

Timothy James Rivera, 17, of the 200 block of Furrow Street, faces assault, theft and related charges.

A 44-year-old man said he took his rifle outside to confront Rivera, who was attempting to break into his vehicle after 4:30 a.m. Wednesday, according to police.

When Rivera swung a screwdriver or knife at the auto owner and cut his hand, police said the man fired his rifle.

The teen ran from the scene but was located, taken into custody and treated for the gunshot wound to an upper extremity at an area hospital, authorities reported.

Rivera was charged as an adult with first and second-degree assault; fourth-degree burglary; rogue and vagabond; and theft less than $1,000. He is being held at the Baltimore County Detention Center without bond.

The Baltimore County State's Attorney's Office will review the auto owner's actions after the investigation into the incident is complete, police said.
