BALTIMORE, MD — A man was arrested Monday in south Baltimore in connection with the weekend assault on a state trooper at Wawa in Halethorpe, according to Maryland State Police.

Anthony Jason Schmidtman, 35, of Glen Burnie, allegedly hit a trooper with a blue Dodge Caravan in the parking lot of the Halethorpe Wawa on Saturday.

The trooper had been investigating a suspicious vehicle in the 3700 block of Washington Boulevard when he saw drug paraphernalia inside, officials reported.

The officer ordered Schmidtman to stand outside the vehicle while he called for backup; however, the man got back in the driver's seat and when the trooper attempted to get him out of the car, police said he reversed and then accelerated, striking the trooper's arm and driving directly at the officer, who moved out of the way.

The vehicle fled the scene, prompting a lookout for the 2006 Caravan with Maryland registration M904798.
