When officers arrived, they found the boy and a 26-year-old man suffering from gunshot wounds.

Both victims were taken to the hospital, where police said the boy was in serious but stable condition. The man was also in stable condition.

According to a WJZ report citing Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley, the preliminary investigation indicates that two people drove up across the street from the playground and fired shots.

Worley said investigators believe the 26-year-old man was the intended target and the 11-year-old was just a bystander.

"You've got two cowards pull up in a vehicle, they want to shoot somebody for some reason, and they shoot indiscriminately, with a rifle, toward a playground where other kids were playing," Worley said. "We were lucky that only one child was hurt."

Western District Shooting Detectives responded to the scene and are investigating this incident. Anyone with information related to this incident is urged to contact Detectives at 410-396-2477.
