BALTIMORE, MARYLAND — New criminal charges tied to the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in 2024 were filed against Karthikeyan Deenadayalan, who served as the chief engineer for the Dali cargo ship, according to The Banner.
Deenadayalan is being charged with violating the Port and Waterways Safety Act as investigators say he failed to alert the U.S. Coast Guard about hazardous conditions of the vessel before collapse.
For the time being, according to The Banner, federal prosecutors will defer prosecution so long as Deenadayalan adheres to established terms that were not disclosed.

At the center of the investigation into the bridge collapse are the flushing pumps that caused blackouts on the Dali.
Officials previously said the vessel's operator, Synergy, was aware of the faulty pumps and that the company had hidden its continued use to regulators.
