Tornado Watch Issued In MD As Another Round Of Severe Storms Moves Through

A tornado watch covers most of Maryland as severe storms threaten damaging winds, flash flooding, large hail and tornadoes.

| Updated

A tornado watch is in effect for most of Maryland on Saturday as severe storms are expected to bring heavy rain, damaging winds and large hail to the state.

The National Weather Service said the tornado watch is in effect until 9 p.m. Saturday for the following counties: Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Calvert, Caroline, Cecil, Frederick, Harford, Howard, Kent, Montgomery, Prince George's, Queen Anne's and Talbot. Baltimore City is also included in the watch.

According to forecasters, several rounds of showers and thunderstorms were possible Saturday morning, and severe weather will continue through the evening hours.

As of 4:15, severe thunderstorm warnings had already been issued in several parts of the state.

The NWS Storm Prediction Center placed that state at an Enhanced Risk (3 of 5) for severe weather, meaning severe thunderstorms will be capable of producing damaging winds, flash flooding, frequent cloud-to-ground lightning and large hail.

"The primary threats are damaging winds as strong as an EF2," the NWS wrote.

As for timing, strong to severe storms are likely for the D.C. and Baltimore Metropolitan areas through 7 p.m. The best chance for severe storms will be between 4 p.m and 6 p.m., and through 7 p.m. farther east.

In addition to the severe potential, any thunderstorms on Saturday will be capable of producing very heavy rainfall with rates of 2 to 3 inches per hour possible. This could lead to flash flooding of urban and poorly drained areas, creeks, and streams.

A flash flood watch is also in effect for the region until 8 p.m. Saturday.
