Marylanders looking ahead to Labor Day weekend will first have to get through two more rounds of potentially severe thunderstorms.
Scattered severe storms are possible Thursday afternoon through the evening, according to the National Weather Service. Storms moving out of Pennsylvania are expected to track into northern and northeastern Maryland through Thursday night, with damaging wind gusts the main concern.
Forecasters cautioned that the exact timing remains uncertain, so residents with afternoon or evening plans should keep an eye on the forecast.
The chance for severe weather increases Friday, when another round of storms could develop during the afternoon and evening. Damaging winds will again be the primary threat.
Thursday will also remain hot and humid, with temperatures climbing into the 90s and heat index values reaching around 100 to 105 degrees in parts of the region. Similar heat is expected Friday.
The good news for anyone with outdoor plans: The weather should improve considerably by Saturday.
Drier and less humid air is expected to move into Maryland over the weekend, bringing a noticeable break from the heat and storms.
Highs on Sunday are expected to settle into the low 80s across much of the region, with lower humidity making it feel much more comfortable outside.
The mild and relatively dry weather is expected to continue through Labor Day, with thunderstorm chances remaining low. Temperatures should begin climbing again early next week.
Thursday: Scattered showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 2pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 92. Heat index values as high as 102. West wind 6 to 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.
Thursday Night: Scattered showers and thunderstorms before 3am. Patchy fog before 1am, then patchy fog after 5am. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a low around 74. Light west wind. Chance of precipitation is 50%.
Friday: A chance of showers and thunderstorms before 4pm, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm between 4pm and 5pm, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 5pm. Patchy fog between 7am and 8am. Otherwise, increasing clouds, with a high near 91. Heat index values as high as 102. Calm wind becoming northwest 5 to 8 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.
Friday Night: A chance of showers and thunderstorms before 11pm, then a chance of showers between 11pm and 2am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 70. West wind 3 to 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%.
Saturday: A slight chance of showers after 2pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 83. North wind around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.
Saturday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 64.
Sunday: Sunny, with a high near 80.
Sunday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 62.
Labor Day: Sunny, with a high near 82.
