Do you have any previous political experience? If so, please state and explain how that experience will influence your time in office if elected.
I served one 4-year term on the Democratic Central Committee. This experience showed me that the number of engaged, interested citizens in Harford is greater than many believe, and it gave me a basic understanding of local government operations.
What do you believe is the single-most important issue facing voters in the district you’re looking to represent? How do you intend to address those issues?
Many citizens feel their voices are not being heard as Harford grows. Change is inevitable, but rapid change can be controlled and evaluated so that we can not only adjust to it but have a voice in it. I will have an open-door policy so that I'm accessible and will seek input from constituents on the issues and concerns that matter most to them as Harford continues to evolve.
How do you differ from other candidates running against you? I am not taking any donations in this campaign and if elected will donate my council salary to nonprofits in the county. I have no financial stake in this position and will not be beholden to donors.
How would your work experience benefit the goals/objectives you’ve outlined in your campaign and/or the office you’re seeking?
I came to Harford as a Department of the Army intern at Aberdeen Proving Ground. Throughout my years of service, I was an active member of multiple teams, primarily working to provide integrated logistics support the Army and the joint services. I worked as a team member, a team leader, a division supervisor, and the chief logistician to the commander.
I understand the importance of working well with others, actively listening, researching, clearly communicating, and supporting well-reasoned solutions to complex problems. My intention if elected is to collaborate with other council members and the administration on behalf of the constituents of my district and the overall wellbeing of the county. Problems can be solved only if we understand the issues and are wililng to brainstorm solutions together. I view this opportunity to sit on the council as a public service extension of my career in federal service, with the focus on keeping our community thriving into the future.
What is your opinion of the work being done by the current office holder, and how will you improve on it?
My council representative is not accessible; he has not been responsive to concerns from my neighbors or me on zoning changes that would greatly affect our area and has not actively engaged in his job as evidenced by his limited participation at council meetings. I would ensure that any constituent with a question, complaint, or concern received a hearing and a response to that issue, with constituent service as my sole priority.
How do you feel about the school system in your area and what improvements would you like to see be made?
As an adjunct instructor at Harford Community College, I hear from students how well they feel they have benefited from their K-12 education. Our public schools must be fully funded, with emphasis on the needs of students at all levels, the instructional staff, class size, safety, and access to mental health support. Harford has been underfunding HCPS for years, and this trend cannot continue. There needs to be more collaboration between the county and the school system, not an adversarial or condescending relationship, and if elected, I will help rebuild that relationship.
How do you feel about crime in your area and what steps can be taken to reduce it?
I have lived in four states and overseas, and in my experience Harford is an extremely safe place to live. We need to continue to adequately train and pay law enforcement personnel and maintain a robust community policing program, which studies show works best in preventing and solving crime. The community needs to trust local law enforcement, not fear it. The link between people's financial and emotional wellbeing and crime is pretty clear, and I will advocate for more funding for proven, effective programs to assist those with addiction and mental health issues as well as homelessness.
What do you think about the economic climate and business sector in your community, and what initiatives could propel it forward?
Harford relies too much on property tax and is not as poised as it could be to grow well-paying jobs. I will work for more collaboration with APG, Harford Community College, and the state of Maryland, as well as with businesses that apprentice, to boost workforce development programs that give young people a career path and offer job-broadening and transitioning skills in fields that are in demand now and projected to expand in the future.
How do you feel about transportation options in the area and what, if anything, should be improved upon?
Public transportation needs to be expanded to better meet the needs of those who cannot or choose not to drive. Our Link system is being evaluated now, and there is room for improvement in what transit is available along with reliability. We need to know what is lacking and must continue to respond to residents' needs with more frequent trips, perhaps more routes, and better connectivity to commuter rail and key locations within the county.
What else would you like voters to know about you?
I believe Harford is a terrific place to live, and that's why I have made it my home in retirement. I very strongly support open spaces, land preservation and animal welfare, and I'm committed to being involved and of use in the county whether elected or not.
