BEL AIR, MD — After Gov. Larry Hogan ordered some businesses to close Monday at 5 p.m. until further notice to curb the spread of the new coronavirus, the Bel Air Downtown Alliance offered five ways people can support businesses in downtown Bel Air.

"During these tough times, our business community suffers tremendously," Bel Air Downtown Alliance Executive Director Christopher Pineda said in a statement.

"Many of our small businesses operate on thin margins, overseeing their employees and covering the overhead operating expenses," Pineda said. "We ask that you continue to support them as much as you can, and as much as you feel comfortable doing so."

Here are five ways to support local businesses in Bel Air, according to Pineda:

  • Visit restaurants and small stores, "if healthy and safe," Pineda said. "Every dollar spent at a Downtown Bel Air business helps!"
  • Order carryout or curbside delivery from Bel Air restaurants. See businesses offering delivery and carryout below.
  • Buy gift cards and certificates. "Not only will you be helping them out now, but you can use them at a later date" when restaurants are fully open again, Pineda said.
  • Shop local businesses online since many brick-and-mortar stores have websites and online shops.
  • Share, comment and like pages and posts from the Bel Air downtown business community. "This helps the business community with the best form of marketing – word of mouth!" said Pineda.

The governor closed down certain businesses to stop large gatherings. Hogan ordered the closure of bars, restaurants, movie theaters and gyms across the state, effective at 5 p.m. Monday. These businesses will then be closed until further notice during the state of emergency to discourage the gathering of groups, in an effort to slow the spread of the new coronavirus.
