Active Shooter Training in Bel Air Will Be 'Noticeable': Harford Emergency Officials

Bel Air police, fire, EMS and school personnel will participate in active shooter exercise this weekend.

Bel Air, MD — An active shooter drill is planned for this weekend in Bel Air, and officials say it will be visible.

Several agencies will be participating in the drill, according to the Harford County Department of Emergency Services: the Bel Air Police Department, Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company and Harford County Public Schools.

Police and fire personnel will be at Bel Air Middle and Wakefield-Homestead Elementary schools, with a "noticeable" presence on Idlewild and West Macphail roads.

The drill will be from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, July 17.

The active shooter drill was said to have been on the books before the Dallas shootings, in which a former Army reservist killed five police officers and injured others during a protest regarding excessive police force. According to The Aegis, Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company Chief'Rick Davis suggested the drill "well before" the July 7 shootings in Texas, as a precaution so the agencies could be prepared.
