Mom Escapes Home With Baby As Fire Burns Garage

The state fire marshal's office is investigating a garage fire that caused $250K and forced a mom to flee the home with her baby boy.

KINGSVILLE, MD — A fire broke out Tuesday morning in the garage of a Kingsville home.

Crews from the Fallston Volunteer Fire & Ambulance Company and Joppa-Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company arrived around 7:51 a.m. at home, which is located in the 2400 block of Whitt Road.

They found flames coming from the garage attached to the one-story single-family home. It took the 44 firefighters around 20 minutes to gain control of the fire, which was discovered by the owner in the garage.

According to the Maryland Office of the State Fire Marshal, a woman living in the home heard a smoke alarm going off, checked her living room and found smoke. She scoured the area for the source of the smoke and found a heavy fire burning in the attached garage. She closed the door, grabbed her infant son and fled the home while calling 911.

Investigators with the state fire marshal's office are looking at all accidental causes of the fire, including an unspecified electrical failure or failure of lithium-ion batteries. Officials credit the woman with stalling the spread of the fire into the home by shutting the door to the garage.

Two adults and the infant have been displaced.

Loss has been estimated by the state fire marshal's office at $250,000.
