Do you have any Previous Political Experience?
No, I have never held elected office before. In fact, this is my first time running as well. My lack of political experience is actually a benefit. I’m a husband, father, and neighbor, not a politician.
I’ve successfully built a career and a life based on my ability to foster good relationships with people from a very wide array of backgrounds and experiences, and I will utilize that ability as a councilman.
What do you believe is the single-most important issue facing voters in the district you’re looking to represent? How do you intend to address those issues?
The biggest issue facing District A is the economy, and economic revitalization. Joppatowne and Edgewood, which make up the vast majority of my district, have historically been overburdened and underserved. Despite the resources that make District A unique, and our potential for greatness, we seem to always be last on the list for any investment from the County. We are an afterthought in the budget.
However, I am going to change that. I believe that District A simply hasn’t had the right representation on the Council. I have the relationship-building skills, the pragmatism, and the passion to be the advocate that District A deserves. I can help the rest of the Council, as well as the Executive Office, see that when one part of the county thrives, the entire county benefits.
And when the county begins to make the investments in District A that are long overdue, people will notice. Existing businesses will grow, entrepreneurs will emerge, and outside businesses will want to come. As businesses emerge and grow and expand, our residents will have more job opportunities, more confidence in the economy, and more safety in their neighborhoods.
How do you differ from other candidates running against you?
I am uncontested in the Republican Primary Election.
How would your work experience benefit the goals/objectives you’ve outlined in your campaign and/or the office you’re seeking?
My professional career has ranged from restaurant management to automotive sales, service, and leadership, to business relations and account management. The overarching theme is one of client-facing service. Every job I’ve held has given me direct interaction with my customers, and the success of every role has hinged on exemplary customer service.
Additionally, I have had the honor of leading teams of 3-4 people to teams of 60-70 people. I’ve managed budgets, negotiated and closed sales, and ironed out business agreements, all while maintaining the highest standards of ethics and client satisfaction.
What is your opinion of the work being done by the current office holder, and how will you improve on it? If that is you - how do you plan to continue improving upon what you've already accomplished?
The current office holder was appointed to this office, not elected. They were appointed when the previously elected office holder was removed following legal issues. Both are campaigning on the Democrat Primary ticket.
The current incumbent doesn’t seem to engage very much with the entire district, instead focusing on pet projects and the wants of various special interests. The previous incumbent (also running) has held this office for 14 years (non-consecutive terms) and really doesn’t have much to show for it. A few accomplishments, and a couple of good bills, but not enough for 14 years of service over a 20 year period.
I will engage actively and often with the entire district on issues that affect all of us, as well as various groups for more focused issues. In my 4 year term, we will see the beginning of a renaissance in District A, through economic development, improved zoning, and increased accountability and transparency.
How do you feel about the school system in your area and what improvements would you like to see be made?
Our teachers and other frontline school personnel are some of the best in the business; they genuinely love the work they do and it shows. The school system, as with most large governmental agencies, has some administrative bloat that should be trimmed, as well as a perceived lack of transparency and accountability. While the Council does not really have direct oversight of the school system, I will work with my council colleagues and the school board members to make improvements and ensure we are delivering a world-class education.
How do you feel about crime in your area and what steps can be taken to reduce it?
I think overall, District A is a safe place to live, work, and play. I do believe that there is always room for improvement, specifically in the community policing aspect. I will advocate for more community outreach from the Sheriff's Office to foster a relationship between the community and law enforcement that is built on mutual trust.
What do you think about the economic climate and business sector in your community, and what initiatives could propel it forward?
This is probably our biggest area of opportunity, and one of the factors in my decision to seek office in the first place. As I stated earlier, District A has long been underserved, overburdened, and underrepresented. There is a high concentration of commercial blight, and several of the businesses we do have are generally not conducive to overall economic growth, especially when colocated and in higher concentrations.
But it isn’t all doom and gloom either; we certainly have our bright spots. That brightness just needs to be supported, amplified, and expanded. Many of our local businesses are owned and operated by residents who want to be a part of the economic revitalization.
Fostering economic growth requires a multi-pronged approach. We need to take full advantage of State and Federal grants that target infrastructure improvements, workforce training, and transportation access. We need to ensure that District A is marketed to potential businesses as a place where they can grow and thrive. We need to revisit our Zoning Code to make adaptive reuse a more attractive option to business developers and investors. And we should explore partnerships with existing industry leaders to foster industry growth.
How do you feel about transportation options in the area and what, if anything, should be improved upon?
Transportation has been a bit of a hot topic lately. Our Harford Link headquarters and maintenance facility is in dire need of upgrades. I support the Comprehensive Transportation Plan request for grant funding for a new facility that can better accommodate our transportation needs. There have been studies and surveys for proposed microtransit plans which I believe will be beneficial upon implementation.
Many of our commercial corridors lack bike lanes and some even lack sidewalks. Our existing sidewalks are in need of repair or replacement. Harford’s growth over the decades has, at times, been a bit haphazard. But with careful planning moving forward, we can make improvements countywide to better foster a sense of place, provide sufficient transportation options, and improve the overall quality of life for all.
What else would you like voters to know about you?
I am, by all conceivable metrics, a political outsider. I’ve never run for or held elected office or any other governmental position. Rather, I am a concerned and engaged neighbor who has the skills, charisma, and tenacity to properly represent and serve the community on the County Council. I’m running to bring positive change to a long-neglected district, not to bolster my resume. I believe in Leadership that Listens, and that with coordination, cooperation, and partnerships, I can help District A lead the way to ensuring that Harford County is always a great place to live, work, and raise a family.
