FALLSTON, MD — The Humane Society of Harford County is reducing adoption fees for adult dogs and cats this month as part of a nationwide effort to ease overcrowding in animal shelters.
The shelter is participating in BISSELL Pet Foundation's Empty the Shelters adoption event from July 5 through July 26.
During the promotion, adoption fees for eligible adult dogs will be $50, while adult cats can be adopted for $25. All adopted pets will be spayed or neutered, vaccinated and microchipped.
Shelter officials said summer is typically one of the busiest times of the year, as kitten and puppy season brings an influx of animals while adoption rates slow. Increased owner surrenders and fewer available volunteers also contribute to overcrowding.
Amanda Hickman, executive director of the Humane Society of Harford County, said each adoption creates space for another animal in need.
The Humane Society of Harford County is located at 2208 Connolly Road in Fallston. During the event, the shelter will be open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends.
