Dog Sparks Kitchen Fire Causing $200K In Damage To Home

A third family dog, Dakota, and two cats died in the Belcamp house fire, while neighbors helped save dogs Bo and Addie.

BELCAMP, MD — A family's pet dog and two cats died in a house fire Friday after another dog jumped on the counter and accidentally turned on a toaster, which ignited combustibles nearby.

The incident happened shortly after 5:30 p.m. at the single-family home, which is located at 4319 Foxglove Court in Belcamp. More than two dozen firefighters with the Abingdon Fire Company responded to the fire, which was detected by the home's security system.

The events that led up to the deadly house fire were captured on the home's Ring security camera. Footage showed the family dog named Bo jumped on the kitchen counter and accidentally turned on the toaster, igniting nearby combustibles.

The owners weren't home at the time, but neighbors rescued Bo and another dog, Addie. But a third dog, Dakota, and two cats died. The home sustained extensive damage from the fire, soot, smoke and water. It took firefighters approximately 20 minutes to gain control of the fire.

The Maryland Office of the State Fire Marshal has estimated loss of contents at $50,000 and damage to the structure at $150,000.
