Maryland taxpayers who still need to file a state income tax return or make a payment through the state's current online system have until 11:59 p.m. on July 29 before those services go offline as the Comptroller of Maryland launches a new tax portal.
The current online system will be unavailable during the transition to Maryland Tax Connect, a new self-service portal scheduled to launch for individual taxpayers on Sept. 1.
While most online services will be unavailable during the transition, the comptroller's office said taxpayers can continue making payments by e-check or credit card during the outage. Those payments will be accepted but will not appear on taxpayer accounts until after the new portal goes live.
The comptroller's office also said it will not assess penalties for payments that could not be made because of the transition if the due date falls during the outage period.
Officials described Maryland Tax Connect as a major upgrade that will replace the state's existing online tax system. The new portal will allow taxpayers to file returns, view refund status, check balances, review transaction history and manage payment plans from a single account. The comptroller's office said the system is designed to be faster, easier to use and more secure.
Maryland businesses already use Maryland Tax Connect, and the portal will become available to individual taxpayers beginning Sept. 1.
