Gun Brought To Joppatowne HS By Student

JOPPATOWNE, MD — A 15-year-old attempted to take a loaded handgun into Joppatowne High School Thursday morning, according to police.

While students were walking into school this morning, the school resource officer was alerted by the school safety liaison that a student was suspected of having a gun on him.

The school's weapons detection system "functioned as intended and signaled the possibility of a weapon," the Harford County Sheriff's Office reported. The SRO detained the student and school safety liaison searched the teen, which revealed a loaded handgun among his belongings, the sheriff's office stated.

The 15-year-old was taken to the Southern Precinct. Authorities said the teen is expected to face charges, though they did not immediately specify what charges would be filed.

Because he is 15, his case will go through the Maryland Department of Juvenile Services, which will decide how the situation will be handled following his arrest.

No injuries were reported.

"Throughout the school year, our SROs and our partners at HCPS train and meet regularly to create a safe learning environment for all students in our Harford County communities. Bringing a weapon to school is never acceptable and will not be tolerated. If you or your child sees, hears or becomes aware of anything unusual, please remember to immediately alert the SRO and school staff," the sheriff's office said. "Today, we are thankful that the combination of partnerships, training and technology led to a safe outcome for all involved."
