Do you have any previous political experience? If so, please state and explain how that experience will influence your time in office if elected. I was elected to the Harford Democratic Central Committee and served a 4-year term. In my time on the HDCC, I learned a great deal about local government, residents' concerns, and systemic issues in the county. I learned how critical community outreach is to have effective local government.
What do you believe is the single-most important issue facing voters in the district you're looking to represent? How do you intend to address those issues? The most talked-about issue today concerns how proposed large-scale projects potentially changing our lives in Harford--data centers and solar "farms" affecting people and the environment. To me, the issue at the root of these concerns is people feeling angry or frustrated that their voices aren't being heard. The county executive and council should be responsive to constituent needs, and that in part means being accessible and available.
How do you differ from other candidates running against you? I have years of experience in civil service and working with the public. I am taking no donations for this campaign and will be objective in decision-making, not beholden to any company or person.
How would your work experience benefit the goals/objectives you've outlined in your campaign and/or the office you're seeking? Working well with others in support of the public is key to a council member being effective. I am a retired Department of Defense civil servant. I spent most of my career at Aberdeen Proving Ground managing logistics for protective equipment supplied to the warfighters. I learned how to lead, how to follow, how to team with people with various backgrounds, skills, and agendas. I believe in serving, as I continue to do today by running Shadow Cats TNR, an all-volunteer nonprofit rescue focused on community cat population control, and as an instructor at Harford Community College.
What is your opinion of the work being done by the current office holder, and how will you improve on it? If that is you - how do you plan to continue improving upon what you've already accomplished? I have been disappointed because of a lack of responsiveness and attention to what I consider to be important issues in the county. I pledge to be available, transparent, and engaged in critical issues and decisions. I will look for best solutions to residents' concerns.
How do you feel about the school system in your area and what improvements would you like to see be made? Supporting our schools is high on my priority list. I work with many excellent, committed teachers, and I know how hard they work to give Harford families a high-quality education. I follow Board of Education issues and want the BOE and HCPS to work together better than in the recent past. It's critical for our schools to have sufficient funding without the political maneuvering that has become necessary to pass the HCPS budget. I will work on bettering communication and ensuring respectful dialog among all involved-- school personnel, the Board of Ed, and local government officials.
How do you feel about crime in your area and what steps can be taken to reduce it? While Harford certainly experiences crime as every other county does, per capita crime here is not a major issue, in my opinion. I live on a rural road, and though I follow commonsense security practices, in the almost 30 years I've lived here, I've had ojust ne incident of mailbox pilferage and nothing more. I'm certain that others in different areas of the county may not feel as safe, and I will solicit concerns and seek ways to improve the safety and security of constituents as needed. At the same time, our nonprofit is setting up a business site on Route 40 in Edgewood, not far from where I lived, crime-free, for over a decage before moving north, and we feel safe in that area as well.
What do you think about the economic climate and business sector in your community, and what initiatives could propel it forward? Harford needs to grow more good job opportunities to expand our economy beyond federal support from APG and property taxes. We need to train more local tradespeople - HCC and Harford Tech do, but the county should help to suppoprt, incentivize, and expand those programs. Some permitting and zoning restrictions could be impediments that warrant change, and I will seek input from businesses, particularly small local ones, on how to help them establish themselves and create more jobs.
How do you feel about transportation options in the area and what, if anything, should be improved upon? Many of my HCC students and clients of our nonprofit have valid complaints about the frequency and routing of public transit that they rely on. I know there are ongoing initiatives to improve transit in Harford, and I pledge to support better, more efficient, accessible public transportation here.
What else would you like voters to know about you? I strongly believe in protecting the environment and preserving open spaces. I am not a native Harford countian, but I chose to remain here after retiring from civil service because I love this area and am committed to staying engaged in ways to maintain quality of life and to improve our county, whether or not I am elected.
