Bel Air Among 10 Safest Cities In Maryland In New List

The town of Bel Air is among the top 10 for safety in Maryland, home security firm Safewise said.

BEL AIR, MD — The town of Bel Air is among the 10 safest in Maryland, according to a new ranking. Home security company Safewise looked at violent crime rates in each town in the state that submitted the data to the FBI. Then it calculated the crime rate per 1,000 people.

What was deemed the safest city in Maryland — Hampstead — experienced 93 percent less violent crime than the national average and 97 percent less than the state average.

The 10 safest towns in Maryland all had a violent crime rate at least 45 percent below the national average, according to Safewise.

Violent crimes include aggravated assault, murder and rape, according to the FBI. The data that was used in the 2018 list for Safewise was from the FBI's 2016 Crime in the U.S. report.
