Bel Air Independence Day Parade, Fireworks To Continue In 2021

The Bel Air Independence Day Committee cited increasing vaccinations in its decision.

"We had to cancel all July 4 activities for 2020 to protect our community, so we are pleased and hopeful that we can return to normal celebrations this year," Bel Air Independence Day Committee President Don Stewart said.

BEL AIR, MD — The Bel Air Independence Day parade and fireworks will continue in 2021, after taking a hiatus in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The theme is "Honoring Our Health Care Heroes."

Organizers announced this spring that the town's beloved summer traditions will go on July 4, 2021, which is a Sunday.

The Bel Air Independence Day Committee, which is all volunteers, plans the event months before the Fourth of July.

“Vaccination percentages are growing and civic activities are recovering from their cessation during the COVID-19 pandemic, so we feel that we can now move forward with the necessary planning and organization process to hold the traditional parade down Main Street," Parade Chairman and Committee Vice-President Michael Blum said in a statement. “Of course, we are implementing health safety measures both in the staging and the parade deployment."

More people will be needed to help out this year, he said, and encouraged those interested in being parade marshals to fill out a form on the Bel Air Independence Day Committee website.

The parade will begin at 6 p.m., with a fireworks display to follow at 9:30 p.m., pending the ability to meet public health guidelines, officials with the Bel Air Independence Day Committee said.

"The daytime events, including Horseshoe Pitching, Watermelon Eating, and Uncle Sam Says are also planned to return, with the addition of social distancing and audience limiting," Committee President Don Stewart said in a statement.

More details on events and safety guidelines will be coming in June, organizers said.

The current Miss Bel Air Independence Day — Chiamaka Ezeonyebuchi — will be the official hostess and Grand Marshal of the parade. Her successor will be chosen in early 2022.
