Attorney Nancy Forster argued that Richardson was given incorrect information about his options when he entered the plea, according to WJZ, which said that there was the sentiment that he was unfairly tried as an adult. At the time of his father's death, Richardson was 16.

There was agreement among prosecutors and the defense at the time of his conviction that the teen had suffered from child abuse, post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and cannabis use disorder.
