Bel Air Middle Students Raise Nearly $900 for Puppies

Students did a service learning project involving the Maryland SPCA.

As part of a service learning experience, students from Bel Air Middle School reached out to help the Maryland SPCA, according to Harford County Public Schools.

Specifically, students from Team 6 South helped a pair of puppies named Flapjack and Penguin who have parvovirus, the school system reported.

Parvovirus attacks a dog's immune system and can damage a puppy's heart muscles and intestinal tract, according to the ASPCA, which reports there is no known cure. Treatment involves addressing symptoms—such as vomiting, diarrhea and lethargy—and preventing further infection by using antibiotics.

To give the puppies a boost, Bel Air Middle students gathered items on the Maryland SPCA's wish list and raised $898.20 to donate to the shelter, according to the report.

"Thank you to all of the students, teachers and parents for helping the homeless pets in our adoption center," the organization posted on its Facebook page. "The MD SPCA thinks the Bel Air Panthers are simply paw-some!!"
