Hendren was directing traffic on Williams and Nichols streets as firefighters responded to a reported kitchen fire on Nov. 20, 2013, when she was hit by a car. She was flown to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center with injuries officials said were serious.
As a result of the crash, Hendren reportedly suffered vision problems, a broken leg and torn ankle ligaments that required ongoing treatment after her release from the hospital on Nov. 24, 2013.

The driver, said to be a young man driving a Volkswagen Passat, was cited by police, and the fire turned out to be a false alarm, triggered by food cooking on the stove.
Upon Hendren's return to work Thursday, the department commended her, stating: "Her dedication and commitment to her chosen career and the people that she serves is an example for all."
