'Belle' of an Effort

A Fallston High School choir performed three songs at Monday's inauguration.

If it were not for the Fallston Belles, Monday's inauguration may have turned into a talent contest to find someone who could sing the national anthem.

Julienne Irwin, a 17-year-old Bel Air resident, was scheduled to perform the "Star Spangled Banner," but could not make the event. Fortunately, the female choir from Fallston High School that was already scheduled to sing two other patriotic songs, stepped in with just 10 minutes of preparation.

"They performed it at the school before," said Patricia Ballinger, the group's instructor. "And some of them do solos for games so they've all sung it."

Ballinger said she was e-mailed by someone within the county government about a month ago to ask if her group would sing "America the Beautiful" and "God Bless America."

One of the group's singers, Lauren Satterfield, was surprised at the size of her audience.

"I think one of the things was just seeing all the people that are here to support us," Satterfield said. "I was telling everybody, I don't think every county has so many not only political officials but just people in general that are willing to come out and support county council and music and the patriotism here in Maryland and in Harford County."

Tara Smith agreed.

"I definitely did not expect a big turnout and it really surprised me how everybody came together for this one event," Smith said.

Other members of the seven-girl choir are Allison Stokes, Jourdan Richard, Katelyn Hemling, Lindsay Satterfield and Laura Ebsworth.

Not only did the group earn applause after each song, but a standing ovation at the end, too. Satterfield said they have their instructor to thank for that.

"We were surprised but we've done the national anthem before," Satterfield said. "Ms. Ballinger has prepared us well for really anything."

Even with just a few moments notice.
