Bike-To-Work Day Event Draws More Than 50 Bicyclists To Bel Air
More than 50 bicyclists participated in a Bike-to-Work Day event in Bel Air. They cruised around town with a police escort.
BEL AIR, MD — Bike to Work Day kicked off Friday with a celebration outside the Harford County administration building on Main Street. More than 50 bicyclists participated.
The group of riders were escorted by Bel Air police officers safely through town, heading up Main Street, down Bond Street and then back to the county administration building. Bike-to-Work Week ended Sunday as a way to promote a healthy and environmentally-friendly alternative to driving to work.
Bel Air Town Commissioner Erin Hughes presented a proclamation on behalf of the town Friday to Ryan D. Kivinski, community resources coordinator for Harford Commute Smart. She also highlighted some of the ways in which the town has been made more bike and pedestrian friendly, such as the painting of “sharrows” along some streets, indicating that drivers and cyclists must share the road. Sharrows, which are images of bicycles with two chevrons on top, have been painted along routes designated for biking and that connect to parks and entertainment venues. The town also has installed bike racks around town.
