Bobcats Crowned State Champs, Huskies Fall to Pointers

Two girls soccer teams from the Bel Air area went to states this year, and one clinched the title.

Two girls soccer teams from the Bel Air area made it to the state championships this year in different classes, and one brought home the crown. Both played their hearts out.

Bel Air girls soccer defeated the Linganore Lancers in the class 3A state championship in overtime on penalty kicks, according to the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA).

The Bobcats beat the Lancers, 3-1, and won their first state title ever Thursday night, according to the Frederick News Post, which reported both teams had made it to the playoffs in recent years and neither had clinched the title.

Bobcats goalkeeper Andrea Sipos made stop after stop despite a hurt shoulder, saying she and her teammates were playing “for ourselves and them [the alumni],” in a post-game interview with The Baltimore Sun.

The Patterson Mill Huskies faced a different kind of opponent in the class 1A state finals Friday night.

The Huskies took on the Sparrows Point Pointers, who were the two-time defending state champions.

Now, the Pointers are three-time winners of the class 1A title.

The Pointers were up 1-0 at halftime, according to BCPS Sports Scene, which covers athletics for Baltimore County Public Schools; ultimately, the Pointers won, 2-0.
