Burglary Suspect Wrestles Cop For His Gun During Arrest, Injuring Both Men: Police

A cop and a burglary suspect were injured during an arrest when the suspect grabbed the officer's gun, police say.

HARFORD COUNTY, MD — An Aberdeen police officer was injured while arresting a man suspected of committing a string of daytime burglaries.

Aberdeen police officers responded to four separate reports of burglaries and thefts Oct. 28 between 10:04 a.m. and 1:58 p.m. in the 200 block of Hemlock Lane, the 600 block of West Bel Air Ave and the 700 block of Beards Hill Road. Residents identified 35-year-old Christopher Mayhew following the burglary at Hemlock Lane and chased him into nearby woods, according to a police report.

A patrol officer found Mayhew standing in a creek inside the treeline, complaining of an injury. Mayhew was ordered from the creek by the police officer and exited reluctantly. Mayhew refused to follow commands as the officer attempted to take him into custody. During the arrest, Mayhew grabbed onto the officer’s firearm to disarm him. One of the residents on the scene intervened and helped the officer subdue Mayhew who was then able to place him under arrest, police said.
