Charges Filed Against Driver Who Rammed Harford Deputy's Vehicle

ABINGDON, MD — Police have arrested and charged a 23-year-old Abingdon man after he tried to elude a traffic stop by deputies and rammed three vehicles, including a Harford County Sheriff's Office vehicle.

Shemar Mekhi White faces numerous charges, including an assortment of traffic violations and the following:

• first-degree assault
• second-degree assault

• malicious destruction of property (two counts)

White rammed three cars on Tuesday, including a Harford County sheriff's deputy's patrol vehicle, authorities said. Deputies also fired their guns as he tried to flee the scene.

According to the Harford County Sheriff's Office, deputies were initially called to an area near Abingdon Road around 12:23 p.m. to follow up on a tip from a resident about drug activity in the area.

When deputies arrived, they tried to stop a suspected vehicle, but the driver, later identified as White, refused and rammed a sheriff's deputy's patrol car, an uninvolved Harford County government vehicle and an uninvolved civilian car, the sheriff's office stated.

The confrontation between White and two deputies led to the officers firing their guns at the intersection of Cotswold Court and Tewkesbury Road, according to authorities. White took off in the vehicle and later fled on foot, but was eventually apprehended.

According to authorities, White suffered minor injuries and received aid at the scene before he was taken to the hospital.

"It is not immediately clear if his injuries are a result of the deputies’ use of force," the sheriff's office stated.

The confrontation between White and the two Harford County Sheriff's Office deputies is still under investigation. Both deputies have been placed on routine administrative leave.

White was discharged Tuesday night, then taken to the Harford County Detention Center, where he remains without bail.
