New York Driver Killed By Passing Car While Walking Next To Broken Down Semi: Police

A semi driver from New York was hit and killed by a passing car while he was walking next to his broken down tractor-trailer, police say.

HARFORD COUNTY, MD — A 22-year-old New York man has died after being hit by a car while outside his broken down Volvo tractor-trailer along southbound I-95 at the 77.6-mile marker in Abingdon.

The incident happened Wednesday shortly after 6 p.m. The tractor-trailer driver, Rajwinder Singh, had the semi's hazard lights flashing at the time of the incident and was parked on the shoulder, according to the Maryland State Police. Abbas Zaheer, 19, also of New York, was driving a black 2017 Toyota Camry and had three passengers in the vehicle with him at the time of the crash.

According to Maryland State Police, Zaheer left his lane and drove onto the shoulder. Police believe Singh was walking from the back of the trailer to the tractor cab when the Camry entered the shoulder and hit him.

Singh was pronounced dead at the scene. Traffic lanes were closed on southbound I-95 for approximately three hours. The incident remains under investigation and charges are pending.
